Software Publishers: A Round-Up of Current News
Find in this article the essential highlights of the end of 2020 announcements and discover the main trends that will shape the enterprise software world in 2021.
Microsoft
Office
The announcement was highly anticipated. The Redmond company ended the suspense last September: Microsoft will indeed offer a new version of its Office suite with a perpetual license. Available in the second half of 2021, it applies to both Windows and Mac OS workstations.
Contrary to initial announcements, Office 2019 will not be the last model of its kind to be offered in a "perpetual" version. However, we will have to wait a little longer to know all the details of the offer (final name, prices, options, new features, etc.).
The latest update of Microsoft's operating system has been available since last October 10. This update, called "20H2," mainly includes new security fixes and the new Settings module.
Windows
It should also be noted that some Windows 10 users noticed in parallel that Microsoft took advantage of the update of its Microsoft Edge browser to install, without notice, four web apps of the Office suite: Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
SAP
The software publisher is accelerating its move to the cloud in the current health crisis context. The German company is indeed betting on the cloud to regain its growth trajectory. The announced end of support for SAP Business Suite in 2025 aims to push companies towards the SaaS model of their solutions. However, S/4HANA, the ERP offered by SAP, is still available in an on-premise version for now.
