Windows 11: Everything You Need to Know

Windows 11 is a major update to Microsoft's operating system lineup. Developed on an NT kernel, this cross-platform client environment succeeded Windows 10 in 2021 and has been the default for all PC stations since its release. It's also available for upgrades from older systems like Windows 7, 8... This lineage to the NT branch (new technology preemptive multitasking, multiprocessor, multi-user operating system...) gives it robustness and high performance. This new version of the Windows environment is even more than a simple update. It resembles a new generation of operating system, referred to as "the next generation of Windows."

Main Features of Windows 11

The new version Windows 11 redefines the organization of your workstation. Many features allow for better management of your display space allocation among your different applications (snap groups) and streamline information flow to simplify integration for specific processing and sharing in collaborative work settings. With a simple combination of keys, you can organize the display of your open applications, align them, and thus optimize your productivity. You can also switch between open windows, active applications, and virtual desktops to navigate through your different spaces.

Smart widgets allow you to keep track of all the information you need in real time, your news feeds, as well as planned tasks and your agenda. Following the same principle of key combinations, you can perform advanced document and file searches on your local and remote storage space, particularly for OneDrive.

Regarding collaborative tools, Windows 11 includes the latest version of Teams by default. It's an essential tool for organizing video conferences, meetings, and document sharing, perfectly meeting new professional usage demands.

From a graphical and ergonomic point of view, the Windows 11 interface brings many changes. It benefits from a wider color range for an exceptional visual experience. Among the most striking elements, this new version is equipped with a new taskbar, with the ability to customize icon organization for faster access. The computer's configuration settings application also has a new design, as does access to the Microsoft Store, which supports Android applications.

Specificities of the Microsoft Windows 11 Version

Compared to Windows 10

In addition to the new features detailed previously, the Windows 11 environment offers better performance on processing and download times compared to Windows 10, especially during update phases.

Family and Professional Versions of Windows 11

This multitasking and connected environment comes in two main versions: Family and Professional, and Professional for workstations.

Regarding the main versions, Family and Professional, and Professional for workstations, by default, the versions are equipped with next-generation high-performance tools, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Store, Microsoft Teams, Widgets, and touch functions. The Windows 11 Professional versions benefit from a higher level of protection, with a BitLocker encryption device that blocks data access on a stolen device.

The Professional versions also include enhanced data protection for Windows to secure information and applications against data leaks related to the use of unsecured devices or applications. These environments allow remote deployment and configuration of workstations (via the cloud), as well as the Windows sandbox functionality, which temporarily isolates a desktop environment when using unreliable applications. This preserves the integrity of the network and other connected stations.

The list is not exhaustive. There are many specific features for the professional environment, such as assigned access (applications accessible on a station according to the profile) that you can discover by deploying this next-generation environment on your organization's client stations.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements for installing Windows 11 on a workstation are:

  • 1 GHz processor with 2 cores compatible with 64-bit.
  • At least 4 GB of RAM.
  • 64 GB of storage space to install Windows 11.
  • A DirectX12 compatible graphics card and a high-definition screen.
  • A high-speed internet connection to allow regular system updates and use integrated communication (Teams) and collaborative work features.
